WaveMakers

Stronger families. Stronger kids. Stronger communities.

Does your family need resources for your child or teen? WaveMakers is more than a holistic family support service in Portsmouth, VA. Its dedication to lifting your your entire family can be felt through our events, workshops, and community gatherings. Want to help your teen build confidence and leadership skills? WaveMakers provides you with practical tools, connections, and encouragement, enabling your child to grow up in a strong and caring environment.

What's unique about the WaveMakers program?

WaveMakers brings families together for activities such as family literacy nights, community meals, circles and conversations, and seasonal support events. You and your children can learn, connect with other families, and build relationships with trusted adults who are invested in your child’s success.

  • Attending a family event

  • Responding to invitations shared on Rising Tide’s website and social media.

 

If WaveMakers is not yet active at your school, you can still reach out to Rising Tide Youth Movement to learn about upcoming events in your area.

Rising Scholars

Give your child the boost they need in reading and math

​

Are you searching for academic support and homework help for your child in Portsmouth? Rising Scholars is a small-group tutoring and mentoring program that takes place right at your child’s school. It is designed to help students who are struggling or at risk of falling behind so they can feel confident, capable, and ready for the next grade.

​

What's unique about the Rising Scholars program?

The Rising Scholars program focuses on building strong skills in reading, writing, science, and mathematics. Students meet regularly in small groups with caring adults who know them by name, track their progress, and encourage them to strive for their best in school. Sessions are held on campus, allowing your child to participate without requiring you to arrange additional transportation.

Why should you enroll your child?
  • Your child receives extra time and support in a structured setting.

  • A trusted adult checks in with your child, listens, and motivates them to stay on track.

  • Learning happens through discussion, group activities, and projects, not just worksheets.

The Rising Scholars program is available at selected schools in Portsmouth. To determine if it is offered at your child’s school and if your child is eligible to participate, please contact your school counselor, family engagement staff, or email us. If it's not yet available at your school, you can still reach out to express interest and learn about future opportunities.

Genius Teen Lab

Help your teen see themselves as a creator, not just a consumer

​

Need a STEM camp for your teen in Portsmouth? Genius Teen Lab is a summer and out-of-school program where teens explore science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and artificial intelligence in hands-on, creative ways. This Portsmouth teen enrichment program also incorporates mindfulness and social-emotional learning, enabling teens to build confidence, focus, and resilience as they work on projects. This program is designed for teens who are curious, creative, or interested in STEM and technology, including those who may not see themselves in traditional STEM spaces but have untapped potential.

What's unique about Genius Teen Lab?

In Genius Teen Lab, your teens work on real projects that connect STEM and artificial intelligence to real-life questions and community needs. They might build simple models, test ideas, design solutions, and then share what they have created with families and community partners. Daily routines include brief mindfulness practices and guidance on managing stress, setting goals, and collaborating effectively with others.
